Seriously, this is some of the best advice you’ll ever get. Whether you’re in crisis or just bored, it’s often extremely helpful to divert your attention to anything but how you’re feeling. That could mean literally anything: watching a favorite movie, going for a five minute walk, listening to music that’s even slightly less depressing (assuming you’re like me and you blast Evanescence when you’re already down). Distracting yourself is also one of the most surefire techniques for shutting down suicidal ideation. You can’t kill yourself if you’re washing your hair, or eating a meal; in fact, if you make an effort to occupy your hands with something simple, you’ll probably find that you’re less likely to even think about suicide.
